There he went on to win the NBA Rookie of the Year Award after his debut season. In 2007, he signed an endorsement contract with Nike. In the 2009-2010 NBA season, he led the NBA in scoring and became the youngest player ever to win the NBA scoring title. He is also a 3-time NBA scoring champion and a 3-time member of the All NBA First Team. He most recently led his team, the Oklahoma City Thunder, to the 2012 NBA Finals.
He says the foundation of his faith in Jesus Christ comes from his family. He said, "I went to a Christian school. When I was young we went to church a lot but we didn't go as much when I grew up and got into middle school and high school. I was always intrigued about how we got here. Why do we do the things we do? Who made us like this? My mom often sat me down and talked to me about spiritual things, and I have spiritual teachers that help me out. I'm not perfect by any means. I've got a long way to go to become closer to the Lord, but hopefully, I can continue to stay on the path. I might take a few steps forward, and take a couple steps back, and then take some more steps forward, but I want to get better....I go to chapel before every game. I have a spiritual coach that I talk to and he's helping me out in my walk with the Lord. My teammates do a great job of sticking together and praying for each other. I always try to get better in my walk [with Christ]."
He said that it is tough to stay humble in a world that is often hyped with fortune and fame. He said, "I sometimes have to remind myself that any day this can be gone. In the Bible, it says the Lord exalts humility, and that's one thing I try to be all the time. When I'm talking in front of people or when people tell me I'm great, I remind myself that I can always be better. I've just got to be thankful to the Lord for the gifts He's given me. My gift back to Him is to always be humble and to work as hard as I can. I've got to continue to be that way." He helps encourage his teammates to put God first in their lives and to allow the light of Christ to shine through in everything they do both on and off the court. His name is Kevin Durant.
This is the "Chief of Sinners," Daniel Whyte III, president of Gospel Light Society International, and just as Kevin Durant gave his life to Christ, may I encourage you to do the same.
First, please understand that you are a sinner and that you have broken God's laws. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: "For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God." Please understand that because of your sins, you deserve punishment in hell. Romans 6:23 says "the wages of sin is death..." This is both physical death and spiritual death in hell.
But here is the good news. John 3:16 reads, "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life."
"For God so loved the world" means that if you are in this world, God loves you. No matter what you have done.
"that He gave His only begotten Son." His name is Jesus Christ. He suffered, bled, and died on the cross for your sins and for mine, and He was buried and rose again.
"that whosoever believeth in Him": the word "whosoever" means anybody at anytime. "believeth in Him" means to trust in Him, to depend upon Him, to rely on Him, or to have faith in Him for your salvation.
"should not perish" where? in hell.
"but have everlasting life" in Heaven with God.
The Bible also says in Romans 10:9 and 13: "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.... For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved."
Dear friend, if you are willing to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation, please pray with me this simple prayer: Heavenly Father, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I now believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.
Congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour!
Remember, friend, Believe by faith. Share the faith. And keep the faith!
