I thought I had him. I really did. Thought I had the victory.

It was when I was 12. I was a huge, huge boxing fan. My father used to check out the Muhammad Ali/Joe Frazier fights via “satellite,” then come home and post the winner on the outside of the door I shared with my brother.

On this particular day, I had just come from a real good run (hoops) at Howard Park, a little spot in the southeast section of Rahway, NJ. Afterwards, me, my buddy Donald and some other Howard guys went to my friend Gary’s house and slipped into the garage. Donald and I put on some boxing gloves. A few dudes shouted “Ding! Ding! Ding!” and it was on.

I was feeling good – my 20 point, 10-assist outing at Howard park had me pumped up (probably an exaggeration, but stick with me). My hoops prowess easily translated to my awesome boxing exhibition, allowing me to just toy with my helpless, outmatched, “older” opponent (Donald was only 13, but the age difference seemed a lot bigger back then).

I was doing my best “float-like-a-butterfly, sting-like-a-bee” Ali imitation, dancing freely, dodging shots gracefully, tagging my opponent at will.

I really thought I had him beat, but then….

Seemingly out of nowhere, Frazier – I mean my buddy Donald – hit me with a straight, hard right square on (or was it through) my nose. My body shook, I got dizzy. The dancing stopped. The butterfly in me turned caterpillar.

“Hold up, hold up, hold up!” I cried.

All I remember after that is one huge headache, a bloody nose, being utterly embarrassed, and making a silent vow to stick to playground hoops.

I thought about this in terms of what it means to be a “freedom fighter.” Not as the media defines it, but what it means to continuously walk in the freedom that we have in Christ. In my little boxing escapade, as long as I was “feeling” good, I was able to freely dance, fight and thwart every attack Donald threw at me. However, one good shot to the nose was all it took to make me forget about all that dancing – and all that freedom I “felt” I had.

What shots have you taken in your life? What’s attacking your freedom – your liberty in Christ? Is it what people say? What people think? Is it your own insecurities that continue to pop up when you mess up? Is it based on whether you “feel” free?

A freedom fighter knows he’s free. There’s no doubt. Why? Because the Word of God says so. It doesn’t matter how you feel, or what circumstances life throws our way. Once we’ve repented and accepted Jesus Christ as Savior and receive His Spirit, we’re free. Freedom needs to become an internal conviction accessed through faith that says “I am free, no longer in bondage to sin.”

So how do we make this freedom Christ secured for us come alive in our lives – so that true freedom is not just a feel-good sermon we can preach to somebody, but it’s truly evident in how we live our daily lives?

As freedom fighters, we fight the good fight of faith (1 Tim 6:12). We stand fast – “hold our ground” in this our freedom in Christ and never to return to a life of bondage (Gal 5:1). The Word of God says “whom the Son has set free is free indeed” (John 8:36); that as His disciples, we would “know the truth,” and that truth will “make us free” (John 8:31, 32); that “where the Spirit of the Lord is there is liberty” (2 Cor 3:17).

Freedom is not a “one and done” thing. It doesn’t come by just memorizing a couple of scriptures although memorizing scripture is a vital step in the process. To gain true freedom, our head knowledge must move to the heart, take root in the spirit, grow and be applied daily. When the “hard shots” and “straight rights” of criticism, family strife, persecution, heartache, injustice, relational breakdown and self-inflicted wounds come to attack our freedom, we fight back and say “no, I am free in Christ, and have the victory.”

Paul was a freedom fighter. Although physically incarcerated, Paul and his buddy Silas were found singing in the inner dungeon of the prison (see Acts 16:16-34). It was the internal conviction and knowledge of being free in Christ that allowed these brothers to freely sing praises while being bound in chains. Soon, this spiritual knowledge manifested itself in physical freedom. The shackles came loose. Paul, Silas and all their fellow prisoners were freed.

Become a freedom fighter. Fight the good fight of faith. Really know and believe you are free. Spend time in God’s Word and allow the Holy Spirit to transform your mind and build up your spirit regarding true freedom in Him. That way, not only will you “think” you have the victory, you will know and experience this victory on a daily basis.
